Torrential rains stretching to over 72 hours pounced in the west of the self-declared republic of Somaliland, displacing dozens of families and killing thousands of livestock. The rains, having destroyed homes and business premises left many people stranded and the streets heavily littered with waste in its wake. Many animals, weakened from the prolonged drought which rendered them too feeble to survive succumbed as the rains were not expected on the eastern part of the country. Most of the livestock deaths, believed to be at least 5,700 were reported in Tog-Wajale district.
At least 600 people are believed to have been displaced from their homes. Most of the families who lost their livestock are reported to have come from the drought-hit eastern parts of Somaliland in search of pasture. View Gallery
