Kedong I.D.P Camp - Naivasha

Main_imageThe post-election violence that rocked Kenya back in 2007 and early 2008 left a trail of destruction that will remain to haunt most Kenyans for years and even decades to come. Thousands died while hundreds of thousands were displaced. Now commonly known as IDP’s and living in dingy tents with zero amenities against hundreds, Kenya’s internally displaced persons are still in a major quandary as they find themselves refugees in their own nation.

And even though the Kenyan government has tried to relocate and compensate the affected, most people still find themselves struggling in camps where they depend on relief food and rely solely on their immune systems to fight diseases. In Kedong’ Camp Naivasha, approximately 60 km west of the capital, Nairobi, white tents seemed to almost overlap each other from a distance. Scenes of children running around the camp, adults huddle in groups or make fires outside their tents were commonplace. The IDPs in Kedong camp consisted mainly the Luos, Luhyas and Kalenjins. However, once the country got back to normalcy, the government embarked on an ambitious plan to relocate the IDPS. They were given Sh10,000 in family assistance funds and moved by military trucks. Some went into town and others to Western and Nyanza provinces.
