Different Faces of The Rainbow Nation

South Africa - It was enough for the Portuguese settlers to discover cape colony in the early 16th century and use it as a port on their route to India and colonization was not a priority for them. They had no need to concern themselves with such, at least not until later in the century when competition emerged bearing the faces of Dutch Traders. The Dutch spread themselves inland and started to acquire small colonies.

They enjoyed their dominance up until the arrival of the British in the 18th century. The British were to eventually be the official masters over this state. Despite its turbulent history, under the struggle of liberation from apartheid, a policy that sought to separate SA racially, the country still flourishes with a vibrant African culture and unlimited resources. Black South Africans were restricted to education and health facilities that were significantly inferior to their white counter-parts. Anti-apartheid advocates were at the receiving end of state- sponsored violence and arrests. Nelson Mandela is a symbol of liberation for the nation.  Eighteen years behind the concrete cells of Robben Island did not make his memory weaken in the memories of his followers. They stood vigil maintaining their fight for the cause. Independence finally came in the year 1994 amidst tremendous international pressure. Freedom Day; the date was 27th April.  Unfortunately independence was not enough to undo the racial differences that apartheid worked so hard to instill. Many South-Africans still view themselves and relate to each other in terms of colour. The 1990’s saw the birth of kwaito music. It was a means through which black youth expressed themselves. It highlights their lifestyle in the townships. It seems to be catching on in other African countries as well. Kwaito has had significant impacts on urban aspects such as fashion.  The 2003 freedom day celebrations saw Thabo Mbeki perform the S'guqa dance with Mzekezeke. Mzekezeke is a popular kwaito artist. South Africa’s economy still has characteristics that are common to many third world countries. The formal sector takes financial precedent over the informal sector. They are however the subject of envy amongst many African states. Their road infrastructure is one that serves business needs at both the regional and domestic levels. The potential for good business is unlimited. This potential has attracted many people seeking greener pastures to the country. The May 2008 riots have still not been enough to deter investors from coming in and advancing both themselves and the nation. South-African marketers have an easy time promoting the nation. People are coming in for all sorts of reasons. Students are now considering Universities in SA as an option over those in Europe or America. Many youth come in from all over the continent to not only to gain technical advancements but to participate and even be affiliated with the urban culture. Its tourism industry is also doing well due to its scenic landscapes and rich historical background. Landscapes such as that on campsbay beach and historical sites that are unrivaled in richness.South Africa is the continent’s land of dreams.
