Reflections of a Nation

kibera_healersPicha Mtaani, Swahili for “Street Exhibition”, is a youth led peace initiative supported by UNDP that primarily seeks

to create space for young people to reconcile through peace building, violence prevention and promoting peaceful co-existence among young people in conflict affected towns.

Through an exhibition set of images taken during Kenya’s 2007/2008 post election violence, the initiative steers to instill individual reflections on the horror that was inflicted to different people during that period.

This particular time picha mtaani held an exhibition in Nakuru county in riftvalley, which was the epicenter of the post election violence.
Two tribes the kikuyu and the kalenjin who had previously co-existed peacefully together turned against each other. Several families were displaced from their homes, churches were burnt and neighbours who had lived peacefully together for many years suddenly became enemies.
These pictures shows how emotional people got after experiencing the picha mtaani exhibition which had a first hand account of images immortalized on film displaying the ghastly and inhumane acts of babarism against a people who once called each other brothers and sisters.
