It is a game that unites like no other. Followed by millions across the continent, football is a religion. In Africa the common image of football is a dusty field, a rugged ball, rickety goal posts and a bunch of shoeless kids kicking the ball for fun. It has been a means to haul aspiring stars out of poverty and it is working. Most of the soccer greats that grace the leagues of Europe have a history of living in poverty before their talent was discovered and as it is said, the rest is history.
Picha Mtaani, Swahili for “Street Exhibition”, is a youth led peace initiative supported by UNDP that primarily seeks to create space for young people to reconcile through peace building, violence prevention and promoting peaceful co-existence among young people in conflict affected towns. Through an exhibition set of images taken during Kenya’s 2007/2008 post election violence, the initiative steers to instill individual reflections on the horror that was inflicted to different people during the period.
The 1984-85 Ethiopian famine was one of the biggest disasters in the annals of Ethiopia and by far, Africa. The disaster was characterized by the cruelest act of nature, war and catapulted by sheer negligence and a don’t-care attitude of humankind at the time. At first, the ground; once flourishing with fertility, dusted off and descended into a dustbowl. Then, the crops and pasture; no longer able to withstand the searing heat, withered into dry sticks that were swiftly brushed off the ground by wind.
The Seashores and shallow seas of East Africa and the western Indian Ocean islands support an enormous diversity of life. The main coastal habitats are mangrove forests, sea grass beds and coral reefs, which vary in their structure and composition.
From July to September, the Mara is home to the greatest wildebeest migration on earth. Known as the great annual migration, millions of wildebeest (gnu) and hundreds of thousands of zebra, and other antelope in East Africa gather up their little ones and start their long march from the Ngorongoro area of the southern Serengeti Plains in Tanzania, to Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve.
The East Africa safari rally,was regarded as the toughest, most grueling competition that demanded both man and machine to be in top condition.Held over the Easter holiday, the rally criss-crossed all three East African countries, Kenya , Uganda and Tanzania.
