It is a game that unites like no other. Followed by millions across the continent, football is a religion. In Africa the common image of football is a dusty field, a rugged ball, rickety goal posts and a bunch of shoeless kids kicking the ball for fun. It has been a means to haul aspiring stars out of poverty and it is working. Most of the soccer greats that grace the leagues of Europe have a history of living in poverty before their talent was discovered and as it is said, the rest is history.
Football has also been associated with politics and governments have been known to interfere with local football associations. Another element of football is its ties to witchdoctors. Talismans, medicines and other potions are an expensive part of football preparations and they are expected to give teams a supernatural boost over their opponents.
Whatever the case, football is the pride of Africa and as South Africa hosts the first world cup on mother Africa, the display of African talent is on the world stage and in unity, Africa supports her representatives with the hope of maintaining the cup at home.
